Library Reading Renaissance Attica USD 5ll has embraced all areas of the Reading Renaissance program including STAR testing to assess independent reading levels, sustained silent reading, Accelerated Reading (AR) testing for comprehension, reading logs, and close monitoring by teachers. The Accelerated Reader Program is a reading program designed for students in grades 1st through 12th. The Kindergarten class also utilizes the program by testing with 5th grade buddies. Their teacher reads them a story and they come to the computer lab several days a week to test with the assistance of a 5th grade student. The buddy reads the questions for their assigned kindergarten student and assists them with operating the computer for the testing. All other classes 1st through 12th have an assigned 30 minute reading time each day. (See individual class pages K-6 for the allotted daily AR Reading Time). AR is easy for students to use. First, the student selects and reads a book. Then, the student takes a computerized test in the computer lab, library or in their classroom. The test includes 5, 10, or 20 multiple-choice comprehension questions. Next, AR computes the student’s score, adds the results into the AR database, and generates the TOP’S report, which provides the student with immediate information on his or her performance. The feedback is in the form of reading points. The program awards points based on the length and difficulty of the book and on student comprehension. Teachers use these reading points to measure the student’s performance, create goals and rate their progress. Some teachers assign a grade for proper usage of AR Reading Time, and 1/10th of the English Grade is based on the percentage of the AR goal achieved. Accelerated Reader will
As K-6 students reach various point levels, these are awarded prizes including pencils, fun pads, items in grab bag boxes, books, gift certificates, etc. The Junior and Senior High students who reach their nine weeks goals are also awarded prizes. At the end of the year, 2 students in the elementary and in the Junior/Senior High School are awarded special prizes at the Awards Program. |
