Attica USD 511 High School
Real Game

During the 2000-01 school year, Attica Public School was part of a grant to further schools to careers education. This was in conjunction with the South Central Kansas Education Service Center. Some funds were also available for local use. This grant provided funds for training in the Real Game series, for development and implementation of a curriculum, and for classroom resources.  The program is K-12 and across the curriculum.

All of the high school students attend a countywide career fair in February.  One of the courses offered to 9-12 students is Service Learning.  They organize the recycling program in Attica and perform other volunteer services around the community.

Freshmen participate in the Be Real Game. The students begin to learn how courses and extracurricular activities directly relate to future life and work roles, and how furthering knowledge and skills opens doors to new opportunities.  The simulated society created throughout the program challenges students' life/work roles with a variety of contemporary job change factors.

Sophomores enrich the transition by writing resumes and doing further investigation into possible career choices.

The Get Real Game for the juniors focuses on the transition from grades 11 and 12 to post-secondary life.  Using highly interactive activities, students strategize ways of acquiring necessary skills, training, education, and work experience to achieve their future goals. They participate in a job shadow day where they go to Wichita and follow around a person in their career choice to observe a typical day.  They also visit with the admission counselor that comes to Attica High School.

The Senior year allows more opportunity for students to start making choices.  Students participate in the job shadowing day, go to the entrepreneur’s workshop at Wichita State University, schedule appointments with the admission counselor that visits the high school, and are allowed to miss up to three school days for colleges or technical schools visits.
