During the 2000-01 school year,
The program is K-12 and across the curriculum. Schools to Careers is introduced in kindergarten with a unit on My Community where the students learn
about jobs, transportation, and recreation in their community.
The first
grade expands the enrichment by visiting a local business, by
having parents visit to discuss their careers, and by drawing the City
of
The second grade
discusses different types of jobs that appear in their literature and social
studies books, watch videos on different exciting jobs like fireman, policeman,
airplane pilot and cheerleader, and have their first big writing assignment
on “What I Want to Be When I’m an Adult.”
The third
and fourth grades use the Play
Real Game. They plan and name a community, choose a home,
buy a vehicle, and get a pet. They
are given a career, and do activities involving job hunting, job interviews,
and job hiring.
The fifth
and sixth grades use the Make
It Real Game. The fifth
focuses on what services are important in the community and how they
can be a service to the community. The sixth grade works as a company
that creates brochures on foreign countries. This
brings in multicultural aspects with the research of other countries,
applying for passports and visa, and choosing careers available in that
country.
